The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), in collaboration with the Somalia National Army (SNA), have successfully captured the strategic town of Darusalam in the Lower Shabelle region from the Al-Shabaab extremist group.
The operation follows the recent liberation of Mubarak Town and is part of sustained efforts to dismantle Al-Shabaab strongholds across southern Somalia.
Brigadier General Jackson Kayanja, Sector One Contingent Commander and overall mission leader, said the capture of Darusalam highlights the effectiveness of coordinated military operations.
Colonel Owiny Akena, commander of Battle Group 44, added that securing the town will enhance civilian safety, facilitate humanitarian aid delivery, and strengthen government presence in the area.
Local leaders and residents have welcomed the intervention, expressing hope that restored security will enable economic and social activities to resume safely.
