PUBLIC STATEMENT BY THE LCV CHAIRPERSON–ELECT OF KITAGWENDA DISTRICT
HON. KENYONYOZI EFRANCE ATWONGYERE
ON THE OCCASION OF INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY – 8TH MARCH 2026

Fellow citizens of Kitagwenda District,
Leaders at all levels,
Development partners,
And most importantly the women and girls of our great district.

I extend warm greetings to you all as we join the rest of the country and the world to commemorate International Women’s Day.

Today is a very important day when we pause to recognize the invaluable contribution of women to the development of our families, communities, and our nation Uganda.

This year, Uganda commemorates the day under the theme:
“Scaling Up Investment to Accelerate Access to Justice for All Women and Girls.”
This theme reminds us that sustainable development cannot be achieved when women and girls continue to face barriers in accessing justice, economic opportunities, education, and leadership.

In our homes, markets, schools, farms, and offices, women remain the backbone of our society. In Kitagwenda District, women are the primary drivers of household welfare, agricultural productivity, and community stability. When we empower women, we empower families and strengthen the entire district.

However, as we celebrate today, we must also reflect on the challenges that still affect women and girls in Uganda. These include gender-based violence, early marriages, limited access to economic resources, unemployment among young women, and unequal participation in decision-making.

Across Uganda, many women still struggle to access justice when their rights are violated. Cases of domestic violence, land grabbing, and economic exploitation remain a reality in many communities. As leaders, we must ensure that our justice systems, community structures, and local governments become more responsive and protective of women.

As the LCV Chairperson-elect of Kitagwenda District, I wish to make the following commitments:

Promoting women’s economic empowerment through support to government programs such as the Parish Development Model and the Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Programme so that women can actively participate in wealth creation.

Strengthening the fight against gender-based violence by working closely with the police, community development officers, religious leaders, and cultural institutions to ensure that cases affecting women and girls are handled promptly and fairly.

Promoting education for the girl child, because education remains the most powerful tool for transforming the lives of women and breaking the cycle of poverty in rural communities.

Enhancing women’s participation in leadership and decision-making at village, parish, sub-county, and district levels so that women’s voices are heard in matters affecting development.

I also call upon men and boys in our communities to become partners in promoting gender equality. Empowering women does not weaken men; rather it strengthens families and builds stronger societies.

To the women of Kitagwenda District, I say this: your resilience, hard work, and courage continue to inspire us. Continue to participate actively in development programs, leadership opportunities, and community initiatives that will transform our district.

Let us all work together-government, civil society, cultural leaders, and citizens to build a district where every woman and every girl lives in dignity, safety, and opportunity.

On behalf of the leadership of Kitagwenda District, I wish all women a meaningful and empowering International Women’s Day.

Happy International Women’s Day.

May God bless the women of Kitagwenda District.
May God bless Uganda.

Hon. Kenyonyozi Efrance Atwongyere
