The High Court has sentenced Mugerwa Paul to 40 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to the murder of Dr. Olila Wilfred, bringing closure to a case that shocked communities across Northern Uganda.
Presiding over the matter, Justice Sarah Birungi Kalibala also convicted Mugerwa on a second count of aggravated robbery, for which he received an additional 20-year sentence.
Court records indicate that the crime was premeditated and executed with deliberate planning. Mugerwa, an employee of a health insurance company in Mbale, reportedly orchestrated the abduction of Dr. Olila from Lira Hotel in January 2025, before killing him and disposing of the body in Kalaki District.
Dr. Olila, a retired medical doctor, was widely respected in the Lango sub-region. He ran New Moroto Nursing Home in Lira, where he specialised in ear, nose, and throat treatment. His death sparked widespread grief and condemnation, with many describing it as a major loss to the medical community.
Delivering the sentence, the court emphasized the gravity of the offence, noting that the deliberate taking of life attracts severe punishment. The ruling reinforces the judiciary’s firm stance on violent crime and its commitment to delivering justice for victims and their families.
The prosecution was led by Jonathan Okello, Chief State Attorney and Regional Officer in Lira.
The conclusion of the case brings a measure of justice to Dr. Olila’s family and the wider community, although the pain of his loss remains deeply felt.
