Kampala 9th May 2026

The Woman Member of Parliament-elect for Rukiga District, Dr Alinaitwe Sylvia Tumuheirwe, has called upon Ugandans to pray for their leaders as the country prepares for the official swearing-in ceremonies scheduled for next week.

Dr Sylvia made the remarks while addressing journalists in Kampala ahead of the swearing-in ceremony of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, which will take place on May 12, 2026, at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.

The MP-elect, who is also expected to take oath on May 13, urged citizens across the country to keep all leaders in prayer so they can effectively fulfill the promises made to the people during the election period.

“I request you to pray for all of us so that the Holy Spirit can guide us as we serve you,” Dr Sylvia said.

Dr Sylvia emerged victorious in the recently concluded elections after defeating incumbent Caroline Kamusime in the ruling National Resistance Movement primaries before going on to defeat National Unity Platform candidate Jolly Tukamushaba in the general election.

Her landslide victory, in which she garnered 89 percent of the total votes cast, made her the highest-performing candidates in the entire Kigezi Sub-region.

The incoming MP has since been praised by residents for championing coffee growing initiatives in Rukiga District. Through her community programs, Dr Sylvia distributed coffee seedlings, hoes, and pangas to all the households as part of efforts to boost household incomes and fight poverty.

She has positioned herself as a strong advocate for economic empowerment and improving livelihoods in the district, with a special focus on transitioning families from subsistence living into the money economy.

“According to the statistics available, about 33 percent of the people in Rukiga are not in the money economy. They work only for the stomach, and we need to address that so that every household has enough food and also produces surplus for sale to earn income,” she noted.

Political observers say Dr Sylvia’s emphasis on household income generation and agricultural empowerment could significantly transform livelihoods in Rukiga if effectively implemented during her tenure in Parliament.
