Kyankwanzi, Uganda
The Minister for Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, Frank Tumwebaze, has dismissed widespread speculation about his health following viral photos that sparked intense debate and mockery across social media platforms.
The images, reportedly taken during a recent engagement at the National Leadership Institute Kyankwanzi (NALI), showed the minister appearing noticeably slimmer than usual—prompting some online users to question whether he was unwell.
However, in a strongly worded statement, Tumwebaze reassured the public that he is in good health, attributing his new appearance to deliberate lifestyle changes aimed at improving his wellbeing.
The minister used the moment to raise alarm about the growing threat of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), warning health professionals and the public against equating body size with good health.
Tumwebaze emphasized that weight loss should only be a concern when it is unintentional and linked to underlying illness. Otherwise, he said, intentional weight reduction through diet, exercise, and disciplined living should be celebrated.
“Obesity has never been a badge of honor,” he added, urging Ugandans to adopt healthier lifestyles in the face of rising NCD cases.
The minister also addressed messages from concerned supporters, particularly those wishing him a “quick recovery,” saying such sentiments, though well-meaning, were misplaced.
“To those sending messages out of love, please take heart—it is well with me. I thank God for the gift of life,” he said.
The incident highlights the growing influence of social media in shaping public perception, as well as the pressures faced by public figures when their personal lives and appearances become subjects of online scrutiny.
Tumwebaze concluded his message with greetings from Kyankwanzi, often regarded as Uganda’s political training hub, reaffirming his active participation in national duties.
