Kyankwanzi-The Kitagwenda Member of Parliament elect hon. Robert Mugabe has asked the Minister of Health to improve the status, recognition, and pay of Village Health Teams (VHTs).
Speaking during the on-going retreat at Kyankwanzi last evening, on. Mugabe noted that that VHTs are crucial for primary health care but often work under challenging, voluntary conditions without adequate tools and need to be recognized and their status improved
Previously MPs had requested that the government, through the Ministry of Health, provide a monthly salary or improved allowance to VHTs to motivate them and facilitate their travel within villages.
The Minister of Health in response indicated that new guidelines are in the pipeline to standardize VHT pay, recruitment, and supervision based on their voluntary work.
