More than 70,000 national identity cards are yet to be collected from the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) offices in Kamwenge District.
Kamwenge District Registration Officer Stuart Oyo said more than 90,000 national identity cards have been registered in the district, but only about 20,000 have so far been collected.
Oyo said NIRA is taking registration and identification services closer to residents by moving to the sub-county level, particularly in areas where residents face difficulties travelling to the district headquarters.
He said the move is intended to make it easier for residents to access their national identity cards and other NIRA services without travelling long distances.
Meanwhile, renewal of national identity cards is ongoing across different sub-counties in Kamwenge District.
Oyo said the mass enrolment exercise for the renewal of national IDs commenced on May 27, 2025, and residents are encouraged to take advantage of the ongoing exercise.
Oyo also urged residents who do not have national identity cards to register, saying the documents are essential for accessing various government services.
He further encouraged parents to register their children and obtain National Identification Numbers (NINs), which he said can help children access government programmes and services, including education and healthcare.
NIRA continues to conduct registration, enrolment and renewal exercises across the country as it seeks to ensure that more Ugandans are included in the national identification system.
