Communities in the Rwenzori Sub-region have petitioned the Minister of Lands, Harriet Ntabazi, seeking government intervention in long-standing land disputes affecting residents.

The petitions were presented to the minister as Land Awareness Week 2026 came to an end.

The communities are calling for timely action to resolve land conflicts that have continued to affect their livelihoods, land ownership, and access to justice.

Receiving the petitions, Minister Ntabazi assured the communities that government would follow up on the concerns raised and work towards resolving the disputes.

Ntabazi expressed optimism that about 90 percent of the land-related cases presented could be resolved soon.

The minister also urged civil society organisations to intensify sensitisation on land rights to help communities understand their rights and responsibilities.

She further called on magistrates and judges handling land cases to give them priority and ensure disputes are resolved within a reasonable time.

Ntabazi said timely resolution of land cases would help prevent conflicts from escalating and ensure affected communities receive justice.

The communities now await action on the commitments made by the minister to resolve their long-standing land disputes.
