The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has assured residents living near Queen Elizabeth National Park in Mahyoro town council, Kitagwenda district that construction of the electric fence will continue beyond the current World Bank-funded section.
UWA Assistant Human-Wildlife Conflict Officer for the Queen Elizabeth Conservation Area, Mike Birungi, said the authority will extend the fence from where the World Bank project ends up to Kanaara Sub-county, adding that the required construction materials have already been secured.
The contractor for the Rwetuuma–Kanyabikyere electric fence project, Tuhamire Muzamiru Kipindi, said work on the current section is in its final stages.
The electric fence is expected to significantly reduce human-wildlife conflict by preventing wild animals, particularly elephants, from straying into communities bordering Queen Elizabeth National Park.
