Kamwenge District LCV Chairperson Joseph Karungi has said the district is working on plans to extend clean water services to villages that are still facing water shortages.

Karungi made the remarks on Thursday during the commissioning of the 505-million-shilling Bunoga Water Supply System in Kinoni Parish, Kamwenge District.

The project, implemented by Water for People in partnership with Kamwenge District Local Government and the Ministry of Water and Environment, will supply clean water to Bunoga A, Bunoga B and Nyaburama villages.

The system is expected to serve more than 2,300 people from about 465 households.

Karungi said the district is prioritising the extension of water services to remaining underserved communities as part of efforts to improve residents’ health and livelihoods.

The water system was constructed in four and a half months by Sprinktech Water & Energy Solutions Provider after its launch in February 2026.

Water for People Program Engineer Ahabwe Jonah Noreen, who represented Country Director Brenda Achiro, said the organisation’s goal is to ensure that every person in Kamwenge District has access to clean water.

He said Water for People remains committed to supporting additional water projects in the district.

Kamwenge Chief Administrative Officer Katusiime Harriet thanked the East Rwenzori Diocese Bishop for providing land for the project and urged residents to use the water facility to improve sanitation.

The Ministry of Water and Environment representative, Rehema Birungi, said the project contributes to government efforts to achieve universal access to clean and safe water.

She urged the service provider taking over the system to sensitise communities on proper use and maintenance of the facility.

Deputy Kamwenge RDC Namara Loy Batuuze commended Water for People for its contribution to service delivery and development in the district.

Meanwhile, Busiriba Sub-county leaders said the new water system will help reduce waterborne diseases and called for similar projects in other water-stressed areas.
