Residents of Kigarama Parish in Kanara Sub County, Kitagwenda District, are living in fear after packs of suspected stray dogs attacked and killed more than 40 goats belonging to local households.
The attacks have mainly affected residents in Kigarama, Kabirizi and Rwibale cells, with about 10 households reportedly losing livestock.
The affected families are largely low-income households that depend on goats and other livestock for their livelihoods. Residents say the continued attacks are worsening their economic hardships.
According to residents, the dogs, believed to have strayed from villages bordering Queen Elizabeth National Park, move in groups and have been attacking goats almost daily, both in grazing areas and within homesteads.
Residents are now calling for urgent intervention from the authorities Kitagwenda District and the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) to address the growing threat.
They fear that unless action is taken to control the stray dogs, more livestock could be killed, further affecting families that rely on animal rearing for their survival.
By press time no authority from stakeholders had commented about the matter.
