Fear has gripped residents of Kigarama and Kanara Parishes in Kanara Sub-county, Kitagwenda District, after suspected stray dogs attacked and bit three people, leaving two dead and another nursing injuries.

The attacks have mainly been reported in Kigarama, Kabirizi 1 and 11 and Kanara cental, where residents say the roaming dogs have become a serious threat to both human life and livestock.

Residents say the two deaths have heightened fear in the community, with many now worried about further attacks if the dogs are not contained.

The dogs have also caused significant economic losses, reportedly killing more than 60 goats and three sheep last week. Goats are a major source of income for many households in the area, raising concerns that continued attacks could worsen poverty among affected families.

Residents say they have repeatedly sought help from the responsible authorities but claim that no effective intervention has been made so far.

They are now calling on Kitagwenda District authorities and relevant veterinary and health officials to urgently intervene, control the suspected stray dogs and prevent further loss of life and livestock.

The community says the deaths of the two residents, coupled with the loss of more than 40 goats, should prompt immediate action before the situation claims more lives and causes further economic losses.

The office of the district veterinary department has not yet responded over the matter.
