Woman Member of Parliament for Kitagwenda District, Hon. Dorothy Nyakato Nzibonera, is seeking to build on her legislative experience and community engagement to advance education, healthcare, women’s empowerment and youth development in the district.
A member of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), Nyakato was first elected to Parliament in 2021 and secured another term in the January 2026 general elections, defeating independent candidate Dr. Grace Ninsiima. Her continued representation reflects her ambition to strengthen service delivery and expand development opportunities for the people of Kitagwenda.
Background and Professional Experience
Nyakato hails from Kitagwenda District in western Uganda. She is an accountant by profession and has experience working as an accounts assistant at the Human Rights Centre Uganda.
Her professional background in accounting has provided her with experience in financial management, accountability and resource administration—skills that are relevant to parliamentary oversight and public service.
She is married to Dr. Erick Nzibonera, a lecturer and Head of the Department of Accounting and Finance at Makerere University’s College of Business and Management Sciences. She is also a Christian of the Anglican faith.
Parliamentary Service and Legislative Engagement
During her first term in the Eleventh Parliament, Nyakato served on the Committee of Education and Sports, where she participated in parliamentary work relating to education, economic policy and national development.
Her parliamentary engagement has complemented her constituency priorities, particularly the need to improve access to quality education, strengthen healthcare facilities and promote practical skills among women and young people.
Having returned to Parliament for the Twelfth Parliament, she is optimistic that her experience will enable her to pursue more development initiatives and advocate for improved government services in Kitagwenda.
Investing in Education and School Infrastructure
Education remains one of the key areas associated with Nyakato’s constituency development agenda. Since entering Parliament in 2021, she has advocated for projects aimed at expanding access to education and improving learning environments.
Among the initiatives she has lobbied for are the establishment of Kanara Seed Secondary School and the upgrading of Nyakasenyi Secondary School to benefit from the Universal Secondary Education (USE) programme.
She has also supported efforts to upgrade several primary schools and secure government funding for the expansion of secondary school infrastructure.
On-going construction and development projects have been reported at Mahyoro Secondary School, Nyabbani Secondary School, Nyakasenyi Secondary School and St. Stella Maris Girls Secondary School in Bunena.
These initiatives are intended to increase access to education, improve school facilities and create opportunities for more learners to pursue secondary education closer to their communities.
The expansion of educational infrastructure is particularly important for rural communities, where distance, limited facilities and inadequate resources can affect learners’ access to quality education.
Strengthening Healthcare Services
Beyond education, Nyakato has advocated for improvements in healthcare infrastructure and access to essential medical services.
One of the projects highlighted among her lobbying efforts is the provision of a CT scan at Ntara Health Centre IV. Access to advanced diagnostic equipment can improve the detection and management of medical conditions, potentially reducing the need for patients to travel long distances to seek specialised services.
Her focus on healthcare reflects the broader need to strengthen health facilities, improve diagnostic capacity and bring essential services closer to residents of Kitagwenda.
Empowering Women and Youth Through Skills Development
Nyakato has also supported initiatives aimed at equipping women and young people with practical vocational skills, including soap making.
Such skills-development programmes can help participants acquire productive abilities, establish small businesses and explore alternative sources of income.
By promoting practical skills alongside formal education, these initiatives seek to widen opportunities for residents who may not have access to conventional employment.
A Vision for Kitagwenda’s Development
As she begins her second parliamentary term, Nyakato is optimistic that more government services and development projects will reach Kitagwenda District.
Her stated priorities span education, healthcare, vocational training and infrastructure development—sectors that directly affect household welfare and the district’s long-term growth.
Delivering on these priorities will require sustained engagement with government ministries, relevant agencies, local leaders and development partners, as well as effective monitoring to ensure that approved projects are completed and deliver the intended benefits.
With her experience from the Eleventh Parliament and a renewed mandate in the Twelfth Parliament, Nyakato is looking to build on the progress made so far while advocating for further investment in her constituency.
Her development agenda places emphasis on ensuring that communities across Kitagwenda have greater opportunities to learn, access healthcare, acquire practical skills and participate in the district’s social and economic transformation.
