The Bishop of Fort Portal Catholic Diocese, Rt Rev Robert Muhirwa, has expressed concern over noise pollution in urban centers and trading areas.

He warns that noise pollution is negatively affecting communities and moral values.

In his Easter message at Virika, Fort Portal City, on Thursday, the Bishop said excessive noise, especially during weekends, has become a serious disturbance to residents.

He noted that loud music and activities from bars and recreational centers often continue from evening until morning, denying nearby residents peaceful sleep.

He warned that frequenting nightlife venues at a young age could contribute to moral decline, increase cases of sexual immorality, and potentially accelerate the spread of HIV in the country.

Bishop Muhirwa adds that the situation may also encourage laziness among youth and contribute to rising cases of theft and other social challenges due to a lack of productive engagement.

The bishop also urged parents to closely monitor their children and guide them away from places that may negatively influence their behaviour.

In his Easter message, he urged Christians to avoid sin and strive for holiness, honesty, and righteousness.

He encouraged believers to rise spiritually with Christ through their actions and daily lives, emphasizing patience and faith amid life’s challenges.

With Uganda emerging from the 2026 general elections, the Bishop also called for reconciliation among political leaders and voters following misunderstandings that may have arisen during the electoral period.

Alex Muhumuza, a resident of Kahungabunyonyi, says loud music from bars in the area makes it difficult for families to rest. He says when residents reach out to these bar owners, they promise to stop, but in vain.

Fatuma Kunihira said while entertainment businesses are important for income, operators should respect surrounding communities.

The National Environment (Noise Standards and Control) Regulations, 2003, under the National Environment Act, prohibit any person from producing noise that exceeds permissible levels or causes disturbance to the public.
