The Bishop of East Ruwenzori Diocese, Rt. Rev. George K. Turyasingura, has urged parents to teach their children their mother languages, saying the practice is vital for strengthening Christian values, preserving African culture, and promoting a strong sense of identity.
The bishop made the call on Wednesday during a developmental visit by the diocesan senior staff to the residence of the Principal of Kyabenda Divinity and Vocational College, Rev. Chance Benon, in Rubona, Kamwenge Town Council.
Speaking during the visit, Rt. Rev. Turyasingura expressed concern over the increasing preference for foreign languages among many African families, warning that the trend is contributing to the gradual loss of indigenous languages, cultural heritage, and traditional values.
He noted that children who understand and speak their mother tongue are better positioned to comprehend biblical teachings and Christian principles. He encouraged Christian families to make local languages the primary language of communication at home, saying this would nurture both spiritual growth and cultural pride.
The bishop stressed that language is more than a means of communication, describing it as a repository of a people’s history, customs, and identity. He called upon parents, schools, churches, and community leaders to work together to ensure indigenous languages are passed on to younger generations.
Rt. Rev. Turyasingura said preserving mother languages is essential not only for safeguarding Africa’s cultural heritage but also for helping children remain connected to their roots while growing in faith and moral values.
