Hon. Julius Nakiyi, the Member of Parliament for Budadiri East, has called for greater accountability and improved management at the National Medical Stores (NMS) as the Parliamentary Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE) scrutinized the institution’s Auditor General’s report.
During the Committee sitting at Parliament, Members examined several audit findings, including expired medical supplies, underutilized assets, delays in the delivery of medicines to health facilities, weaknesses in financial reporting and accounting practices, and other governance and operational concerns affecting the institution.
Hon. Nakiyi emphasized that efficient management of public resources is essential to ensuring Ugandans receive timely access to quality healthcare services. He noted that persistent delays in the delivery of medicines and weaknesses in financial management undermine public confidence and negatively affect service delivery.
He urged the National Medical Stores to strengthen its internal controls, improve accountability mechanisms, and ensure strict compliance with financial management regulations to safeguard public resources.
The Committee also sought explanations from NMS officials on measures being undertaken to address the audit queries and prevent similar shortcomings in the future.
COSASE continues to examine the Auditor General’s findings as part of Parliament’s oversight mandate to promote transparency, accountability, and value for money in public institutions. The Committee’s recommendations will be presented to Parliament upon conclusion of the inquiry.
