KABALORE DISTRICT — The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, the Most Rev. Dr Stephen Samuel Kaziimba, has asked mourners to emulate the legacy of the late King of Tooro Kingdom, Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, by supporting sports, particularly football.
Preaching to thousands of mourners who had gathered at St John’s Cathedral in Kabalore District on Saturday, Archbishop Kaziimba said the late king was passionate about sports and supported local tournaments, the Uganda Cranes and Arsenal Football Club.
“He loved sports. He supported local tournaments and our sports. He supported the Uganda Cranes and, above all, he supported Arsenal,” Archbishop Kaziimba said.
He urged mourners and the public to honour the late king’s memory by continuing to support the sporting activities he cherished.
“If you want to follow his legacy, support Arsenal, all of you,” he said, drawing laughter and applause from the mourners.
Archbishop Kaziimba also recalled the late king’s enthusiasm for Arsenal, joking that the club’s victories since his death would have given him something to celebrate.
“He would be celebrating with me, and the Katikkiro of Buganda, the Prime Minister,” he said.
King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV died last month at the age of 34 in the United States, where he was receiving treatment for cancer.
His coronation three decades ago, following the death of his father, King Olimi III, made him the world’s youngest monarch. Images of the toddler king donning a crown and royal robes sparked curiosity and admiration around the world.
