A Member of Parliament for Kibale County, Hon. Eng. Cuthbert Abigaba Mirembe Tugumizemu, has been appointed Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Education and Sports for the First Session of Uganda’s 12th Parliament. The appointment, announced on 7th July 2026, places him at the helm of one of Parliament’s key sectoral committees responsible for overseeing education and sports in the country.

Speaking after his appointment, Hon. Abigaba described the new role as a great honor and responsibility. He expressed gratitude to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the National Resistance Movement leadership, the Government Chief Whip, and other party organs for endorsing his nomination. He also thanked supporters and asked for God’s guidance as he takes on the new assignment.

As Chairperson, Hon. Abigaba will lead the committee in overseeing government programmes, reviewing legislation, and providing policy guidance on matters affecting the education and sports sectors. His priorities include improving access to quality education, enhancing teacher welfare, expanding sports infrastructure, and promoting youth talent development across Uganda.

The Parliamentary Committee on Education and Sports is mandated to scrutinize government budgets, policies, and programmes relating to schools, universities, technical and vocational institutions, as well as national sports bodies. The committee plays a vital role in ensuring effective service delivery and accountability within the sector.

Hon. Abigaba, a professional engineer, called upon parents, teachers, learners, coaches, and other stakeholders to work closely with the committee in advancing Uganda’s education and sports agenda. He pledged to serve diligently alongside fellow committee members to deliver meaningful improvements for all Ugandans.
