Former Sembabule District Woman Member of Parliament Mary Begumisa has asked the High Court to nullify Florence Nambaziira’s election and declare her the duly elected representative for the district.
Begumisa filed a petition at the High Court in Masaka challenging Nambaziira’s victory in the January 15, 2026 parliamentary election, alleging that irregularities during the electoral process affected the outcome.
The petition is before Justice Thomas Ochaya, one of the judges assigned to handle election petitions in Masaka.
The hearing of the petition has been scheduled for October 14 and 15, according to recent court reports.
Nambaziira is also expected back in court on September 28 following an application in which Begumisa’s lawyers raised concerns about the filing of required court documents.
In her petition, Begumisa argues that the election process in Sembabule was not conducted in accordance with the law and that the declared results did not reflect the will of the electorate.
She is asking court to set aside Nambaziira’s election and instead declare her the rightful Woman Member of Parliament for Sembabule District.
The petition also challenges the conduct of the Electoral Commission and raises several allegations of electoral irregularities. The allegations remain contested and will be determined through the court process.
Nambaziira, who was declared the winner, has rejected the challenge and expressed confidence in her legal team and the judicial process.
She has also urged her supporters to remain calm and not be intimidated by the petition.
“I am confident that we are going to win this case. My supporters should remain calm and should not allow themselves to be intimidated by the court case,” Nambaziira said.
Nambaziira defeated Begumisa in the January election, according to official results cited in earlier reports. She received 61,638 votes, while Begumisa polled 24,495.
Begumisa, however, maintains that the election was marred by irregularities and wants the court to overturn the result.
The case is among several election petitions arising from the 2026 parliamentary elections that are being handled by courts in the Greater Masaka region.
