Following the 2026 Ugandan general election, new and returning Members of Parliament (MPs) and district leaders Kitagwenda were elected to the 12th Parliament of Uganda and district.
Here is the list of the newly elected Kitagwenda district leaders based on the 2026 election reports:
- Dorothy Nyakato Nzibonera woman MP.
Dorothy Nyakato Nzibonera is the current Woman Member of Parliament for Kitagwenda District in Uganda in the eleventh Parliament of the Republic of Uganda. She is affiliated to the National Resistance Movement the ruling political party in Uganda after the January, 2021 polls.
Dorothy Nyakato Nzibonera, the incumbent Woman Member of Parliament for Kitagwenda District, was re-elected for a second term following her victory in the recent general elections.
Nzibonera, representing the National Resistance Movement (NRM), garnered 31,218 votes, (64.1 percent) of the total, defeating independent candidate Dr Grace Ninsiima, who received 17,283 votes, equivalent to 35.9 percent.
She is also an accountant by profession and has served as an accounting assistant at the Human Rights Centre Uganda.
In the 11th parliament, she serves on the Committee on Education and Sports.
Background and education
Dorothy Nyakato hails from the Kitagwenda District in Western Uganda. She is a Christian and is an Anglican. Dorothy is married to Dr Erick Nzibonera as of March, 2026.
Political career
She is the woman representative of parliament of Kitagwenda district the eleventh Parliament of Uganda. In 2021, she defeated Asiimwe Joan of the Forum for Democratic Change, Ninsiima Grace who had lost to Dorothy in the primaries and Kenyonyonzi Efrance who contested as independents in the January, 2021 polls to win the election by majority of the votes cast.

2 KENYNYOZI EFRANCE ATWONGYERE
Efrance Kenyonyozi Atwongyere is the first female LCV Chairperson (District Chairperson) for Kitagwenda District in Uganda.
She will become the third chairperson Kitagwenda district after Robert Mugabe (interim 2019-2020) Ismail Mushemeza 2021-2026.
Election: She was elected unopposed in after winning the 2025 NRM primary elections, becoming not only the first female LC5 Chairperson Kitagwenda but also the first in the entire Toro sub-region.
Background: In the 2025 National Resistance Movement (NRM) primaries, she defeated four other male and one female contender, including the incumbent Ismail Mushemeza Kambanda. She later ran unopposed in the 2026 general elections.
Tenure: She will assume office in May 2026, succeeding Ismail Mushemeza.
Impact: Efrance has been credited with the zeal to fight corruption that has crippled services in Kitagwenda, focusing on unity and service delivery, improving education and household income.
Kenyonyonyozi, a teacher by professional is an experienced leader who served as the district councillor greater Ntara from 2011-2021 when contested for the woman MP but lost to hon. Dorothy Nyakato Nzibonera.
She served as the secretary for community based services in greater Kamwenge from 2011-2016 under the stewardship of Robert Kamasaka Itwara the then LCV chairperson greater Kamwenge.

ROBERT MUGABE
Robert Mugabe of the National Resistance Movement party was elected Member of Parliament for Kitagwenda County after registering a commanding victory in the recently concluded parliamentary elections.
According to official results, Mugabe garnered 33,249 votes, representing 68.6 percent of the total votes cast defeating other six contenders including former MP Abbas Agaba Mugisha and outgoing incumbent Joseph Nulu Byamukama.
Robert Mugabe alias Omutembuzi has transitioned from serving as former district councillor, local council five chairperson(interim) to becoming a Member of Parliament (MP). Based on recent reports leading into the 2026 general election, here is how Robert Mugabe transitioned:
2010-2015: Robert Mugabe was the chairperson youth Nyabbani Sub County.
2012-2013 Mugabe was elected the chairperson farmers forum-NAADS –Nyabbani Sub County.
2016: Well-known for his service, Robert Mugabe successfully became un opposed in the NRM and general elections as a district councillor for Nyabbani Sub County in then Kamwenge district. He was elected as a deputy speaker Kamwenge district council under the stewardship of Aggrey Natuhamya as the LCV chairperson.
- 2019-2020: After Kitagwenda district was curved out of Kamwenge in 2019; Robert Mugabe was elected unopposed by councilors as the interim chairperson Kitagwenda district.
2020: Robert Mugabe was elected as the NRM LCV flag bearer defeating Robert Kamasaka and Ismael Mushemeza.
On 13th January 2021, the electoral Commission cancelled the nomination of Robert Mugabe for the Kitagwenda district LC V chairperson race citing lack of academic qualifications.
Later on Mugabe went for the mature age entry to further his academic qualifications.
On 25th October 2024 Robert Mugabe graduated with bachelors’ degree in social administration and management from Bishop Stuart University. On 28th November 2025 he graduated with a post graduate diploma in public administration and management from Team University and is currently doing research to finish his masters.
In 2025, Robert Mugabe changed his mind and declared his bid for Kitagwenda MP Seat which he won with over 60% in the NRM primary elections.
His victory was challenge in the NRM tribunal by former MP hon.Abbas Agaba but was dismissed with disgrace by Tanga Odoi the chairperson NRM electoral commission.
Robert was finally elected and declared as the MP elect Kitagwenda county in the 2026 general elections defeating other six contenders including the incumbent hon. Joseph Nulu Byamukama.
