The Kitagwenda District Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Dorothy Nyakato, has urged parents to provide equal educational opportunities for both boys and girls, warning against cultural beliefs that continue to disadvantage the girl child.

Hon. Nyakato made the call while addressing mourners during the burial of the late Florence Mucunguzi, a civil servant, in Kantozi Village, Kabujogera Town Council, Kitagwenda District.

The legislator expressed concern that some parents still prioritize boys’ education over that of girls, describing the practice as a backward mindset that undermines development and prevents girls from realizing their full potential.

She urged parents and guardians to abandon such beliefs and recognize education as a fundamental tool for empowering children, transforming families and promoting development across the district.

Hon. Nyakato emphasized that investing in the education of girls is equally important in building a more informed, empowered and prosperous society.

During the burial ceremony, the legislator also paid tribute to the late Florence Mucunguzi, whom she described as a calm, resilient and hardworking woman who diligently served in her professional duties.

In a related message, Hon. Nyakato encouraged residents to prioritize their health by seeking regular medical check-ups to establish their health status, emphasizing that early detection of illnesses can improve treatment outcomes.

She called on community members to embrace preventive healthcare and make regular health assessments part of their routine.
